Vegetarian and vegan restaurants are expanding in Ottawa as the city moves toward a meatless, plant-based diet.
Vegetarian eateries like this one in Ottawa have been popping up all over the city and now are expanding into the Ottawa area.
The food is all about the vegetables, says owner Michelle O’Malley, who has been serving vegan dishes since 2006.
She started her restaurant because she loved the feeling of the vegetable, she says.
She likes the smell and taste of the meat.
She said the vegetarian menu was born out of her desire to be a healthier vegan.
“I started thinking about it as a way to change the way I eat,” she said.
She said she wanted to create a place where the restaurant serves food with a meat-free focus, and is also trying to promote awareness of animals.
O’Malley says she has had the support of some people in the community.
“They’ve helped me and have been very supportive of me,” she says, adding that she wants to offer more options for vegans.
Odell, who lives in the area, has been trying to get people to try the menu, but the response hasn’t been great.
She says she’s had a lot of support from the community and friends.
“I’m not sure it’s going to happen for a while,” she admits.
“It’s hard to say, but I think it’s gonna be a while.
The restaurants are growing, but it’s hard for a lot people to find it, because they’re afraid of being ostracized.”
She is hoping that with more vegan options on the menu and better advertising, she will be able to open up a place in the future.
